Shachtman, 1904-1972, was a leader of the Communist Party until 1928, when he was expelled along with James P. Cannon and others for their support of Trotsky. He was a founder and leader of the Communist League of America (Left Opposition) and its successor organizations until 1940 when he led a split in the Socialist Workers Party over the class nature of the Soviet Union, and founded the Workers Party. *Johnpoll.
