Hangzhou: Dong fang hong si zhi chang ['East is Red' Silk Factory], [196-?]. 11x16.5 inch pictorial silk hanging designed for wall display, depicting a youthful Mao gesticulating while delivering a speech on May 26, 1939 (taken from a photo). Black and white, title in red at bottom, name and location of factory at bottom right. Faint stain to right edge about 1/3 up from the bottom, otherwise very good, suitable for display.
The Dong Fang Hong plant took this name in 1966 under the influence of the Cultural Revolution, and retained it until 1972, thus enabling us to date this piece to a six year period. These banners wishing Mao a long life (literally, 10,000 years) were produced in large numbers; this example portrays a relatively rarely seen image of Mao.
