Hangzhou: Dong fang hong si zhi chang ['East is Red' Silk Factory], [196-?]. 11x14.5 inch pictorial silk hanging designed for wall display, depicting a youthful Mao in northern Shaanxi in 1936 (taken from a famous photo). Black and white, title in red at bottom, name and location of factory at bottom right. Very good, suitable for display.
The Dong Fang Hong plant took this name in 1966 under the influence of the Cultural Revolution, and retained it until 1972, thus enabling us to date this piece to a six year period. These banners wishing Mao a long life (literally, 10,000 years) were produced in large numbers; this is an unusually well-preserved example.
