Philadelphia: Henry Longstreth, 1856. 300p., sewn signatures cased into ribbed dark brown cloth ruled and panelled in blind, with spine title gilt. Aside from an ill-judged old "repair," which renders the spine tunnel "tightback" at one point (described below), this is an unsophisticated copy still reasonably sound. Expect severe edgewear showing card at corner tips and along bottom edge, and narrow losses round the rims, a half-inch at head, eighth-inch to tail. Hinges and joints entirely intact and strong, textblock is firm and tight except for a gap at 178/9. Endsheets are original and unmarred. The most disfiguring flaw is the titled area of spine where about two inches of cloth burst and tore laterally with small losses and the obliteration of four gilt letters; to remedy the defect, former owner injected glue or mucilage into the area, which tacked down loose cloth but adhered the area to backstrip. There are spots of clear sealing wax or somesuch dotting an area on back cover. An ugly copy seen on the shelf, more nearly presentable when held and opened.
