Autobiographical notes tell us Cirul was born in Latvia, he read Jack London in translation and headed for San Francisco. In the 1930s he and friends did some also-ran gold panning. Much later, navvy work on Alcatraz Island, the discovery of marijuana, drinking tales passim.
