First letter handwritten, about 50 words; second letter typed with signature and note in handwriting, 90 words.
Lincoln Steffens (1866-1936), known as one of the muckraking journalists, was born in San Francisco, graduated from UC Berkeley, made his mark as an investigative journalist in NY, and returned to California in 1927 to live in Carmel until his death in 1936. Williams Institute was a private elementary and secondary school housed in a mansion in the Berkeley hills.
