Peradeniya, Ceylon: Published by the Government of Ceylon, 1961. xv, 152p., b&w plates section, very closely printed double-column with untrimmed edges (signatures opened neatly, in the main),10x7.5 inch golden yellow wraps decorated in rose pink and tan, a fine-looking production. The title page has an old price in ink and a distributor's stamp, careless storage has caused the entire textblock to be a little waved, otherwise the cover shows mildest signs of handling, a very good copy. Sanskrit and Pali terms are transliterated, Chinese terminology appears in characters and transliteration. Scholarly no end, a huge project; and one that may not have been completed, given that we currently see available on the net only earliest parts, and that Sri Lanka has been in the grip of violence for decades.
Editor Malalasekera comments, "The compilation of an Encyclopaedia of Buddhism in the English language was one of the several undertakings of the Lanka Bauddha Mandalaya (Buddhist Council of Ceylon) which was set up the the Government of Ceylon in 1955"
