New York: A. S. Barnes & Company, 1876. viii, 192p., endsheets feature publisher's ads, wood-engraved vignette illustrations throughout, 7x4.5 inch quarter-calf- backed decorated paper over boards. Original edition; per ads, this 1876 issue appears to be subsequent to an 1871 or 1875 first. The leather spine titled gilt is a bit rubbed, still quite legible, the leather itself well-tanned and sound. A child has scribbled here and there lightly in pencil but no printed text is obscured; boards are edgeworn and show card all around, the printed cover images are badly rubbed with some obscurity, ffep has an inch-long closed tear, there are some tiny dogears, all in all a remarkably well-preserved item. National series.
Clark offers a sort of proto-diagramming presentation of sentence structure, with enclosing cartouches instead of dangling lines.
