In preface, author talks about how she was surprised to discover (after living in Germany for some time and meeting many gay men) how gays in America were much more united and political. In chapters focused on particular individuals, she discusses her encounters with US gay men in San Francisco (12), Los Angeles (2), Chicago (3), Atlanta (2), Washington DC (2), and New York (3). Several of the interview-based essays focus on the AIDS crisis, but other topics include gay churches, S&M, coming out at work, being gay and Japanese, drag, and gay politics.
