Eizu towa nanika: nazo no shotai ni semaru エイズとは何か : 謎の正体に迫る [What is AIDS? Closing in on the true nature of this enigma]

Tokyo: Nihon Hoso Shuppan Kyokai 日本放送出版協会, 1986. Paperback. 181p., text in Japanese, illustrated with b&w photos and figures, very good trade paperback edityion in white Frenchfold wraps and orange wraparound band.

Abe was at the time of writing the director of the Teikoku Daigaku Medical School and a major consulting authority on hemophilia and infectious disease. He became the target of heated criticism during the iatrogenic AIDS scandal. Written almost a decade before that scandal became most intense, this book sets out basic information from an early stage in the AIDS crisis. It explains the appearance of AIDS in the US and Japan; discusses the meaning of the term AIDS; narrates the search for the virus; explains the nature of immunodeficiency, and describes AIDS symptoms. It also sets forth recommended AIDS policies, and in a chapter entitled "Homos and hemophiliacs: their psychological differences" discusses risk groups (whereas homosexuals get AIDS as a result of their own homosexual conduct - which they refuse to stop in spite of his efforts to dissuade them from having sex - the hemophiliac may be upset that he got it the disease through a blood transfusion).
