Work, the first African American to earn a M.A. from the University of Chicago, wound up at Tuskegee, where, in his position as director of records and research, he indefatigably compiled and systematized statistical information, historical and current, on African Americans. In 1928, he published A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE NEGRO IN AFRICA AND AMERICA, the most important reference work available on African Americans.
