Nashville: Sunday School Publishing Board, 1928. Hardcover. 128p., scattered pencil marginalia, previous owner's signature on front pastedown, some fading to gilt lettering and very light edgewear, generally very good. Clarifies the role of the deacon - the officer ordained by humans, not by the divine - in the role of the Baptist church.
Brown, born in South Carolina at the very end of the Civil War, became one of the south's most important Baptist ministers, holding pulpits in Texas, Florida and Tennessee, and for two years Atlanta's Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. He published extensively, especially as the Editor-in-Chief of the Sunday School Publishing Board.
