Wexley's first play and publication. He was a playwright and screenwriter ("Angels with Dirty Faces," "The Last Mile") who fought in WWII and yet was blacklisted in the 1940s-50s. This is an anti-capital punishment prison play which launched the careers of Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable and was filmed twice, first in 1932 and again with Mickey Rooney in 1959.
