California cult; the story of "Mankind United"

Boston: Beacon Press, 1958. xi, 163p., very good hardcover in an edgeworn dj that has chips at spine ends. Beacon series in the sociology of religion.

"Mankind United made its first appearance in 1934," morphed into "the Christ Church of the Golden Rule, whose membership gave up all worldly possessions. The Prophet, known as 'The Voice of the Right Idea,' led a sometimes 250,000 followers, there was a Cult Bible, and behind the scenes, in impenetrable secrecy, stood the mysterious Sponsors with their numerous aliases and doubles, in full control of all kinds of secret devices which would suspend animation, stall motors, and control explosives" (text adapted from dj).
