New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1938. 241p., first American edition cloth boards in dj, contains a laid-in printed note from the publisher responding to accusations by a British peer that Vilaplana lied about his recent past. Minute frayed spot at head; pervasive damp has stained the jacket, faintly affected cloth, and must have contributed to considerable browning of paperstock. The author, an early supporter of the Nationalist cause and its Commissioner of Justice in Burgos, became revolted by the franquist administration of justice and fled the country. Translated by W. Horsfall Carter.
