Parsons, Philip A[rchibald]

Responsibility for crime; an investigation of the nature and causes of crime and a means of its prevention; submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy in the faculty of political science Columbia University

Columbia University, New York. 1909, 195p., sewn signatures in plain printed robin's-egg-blue wraps. Largely unopened, a few neat openings by this cataloguer, wraps are slightly dust-soiled (back cover more so) and are a little edgeworn and chipped. Advocates dismantling the present prison system, Ferri, Drahms & Co have useful ideas to replace it, sentimental ameliorations are futile because of the predominence of nature over nurture. Unclear if Parsons advocates eugenical surgical strikes, but does advocate "segregation, permanent detention after identification .. the idea of punishment should be eliminated, the prisoner should be kept in all the reasonable comforts of life until his death from natural cause.. compelled to work.. considered as legally dead.." see pp.153-5
