Wells, Wesley Robert

My name is Wesley Robert Wells. Foreword by Buddy Green.

State Defense Committee for Wesley Robert Wells, San Francisco. 1951, 26p., wraps, paper evenly toned, 4.5x6 inches. Content similar to a version by the same title published by the San Francisco Civil Rights Congress. Wells was an African American inmate in San Quentin prison sentenced to death for throwing a cuspidor at a guard while serving a life sentence. Attorney Charles Garry, later known for his work with the Black Panthers, filed a suit on his behalf attacking many of the racist policies of the prison system, including its segregation policies, as failure to provide true rehabilitation. His case and the support campaign around it has been discussed relatively recently in Theodore Hamm's "Wesley Robert Wells and the Civil Rights Congress Campaign."
