Helfer, Jacques R

The natural history of Mendocino,; Mendocino, California; completely illustrated, all illustrations by Jacques R. Helfer

Published by the Author, Mendocino. 1970, 158p., profuse specimen-drawings are integrated with detailed text, with some nature scenes and one color plate (of Native American basketry). Seeing as how he was in charge, Helfer also printed a few of his odes to Nature, in haiku form. Hardcover, 11.25 x 8.5 inch cloth boards titled in gilt, coated paperstock throughout, a pretty elaborate production in as-new condition (seems not to have been handled) but very faintly moth-ball-y. Anecdotal and in places chatty, but plenty of Latin species denomination; Helfer may be self-taught. This is the fifth and possibly the most elaborate of the author's treatises on his chosen locale, along with "99 Birds of the Mendocino Coast" and "How to know the Grasshoppers, Cockroaches, and their Allies." The big emphasis in this title is on (shudder) bugs, but also birds, mammals, vegetation, shells, and even the profusion of driftwood generated by the area's lumbering industry. FYI, the locally-made baskets illustrations decorate a final chapter entitled Random Thoughts on Behavior
