Viele, Mrs. [Egbert L.; nee Therese Griffin]

"Following the drum:" a glimpse of frontier life

Rudd & Carleton, New York. [1858], 256p., publisher's ads; first edition diced greygreen cloth gilt, panelled blind, original matte endpapers, an intact copy with with the following flaws : edgewear, flecks of board showing and a nick and a tiny tear; dimmed and slightly soiled with handling, spine title still legible; one signature slightly started, several leaves fractionally bumped, light greying and foxing throughout. Spine has a light vertical crease, suggesting an unobtrusive hinge "repair," but we see no other such sign, the tunnel mostly open (--but on the other hand it's partly closed..) in sum, a handleable copy with no obvious sophistication. Has an interesting period bookseller's label in back, and a provenance trail of presentation and ownership signatures. Text is sophisticated and deft. Therese was modern, unsentimental, looked about.
