Rooney, David

Kwame Nkrumah, the political kingdom in the third world

St. Martin's Press, New York. 1988, viii, 292p., endpaper map and one other, first American edition boards in glossy dj; the very faintest signs of handling. Who is Rooney and can he be trusted? To judge from his other publications he is an orthodox military historian who loves to promote British glory in battle-- Wingate, Stilwell, Burma, "military mavericks, extraordinary men of battle." He's done a biography of Nkrumah's colonialist predecessor, Sir Charles Arden-Clarke, issued earlier than the present book --and so closer to his heart? . .I always check indices for "CIA" refs and was rewarded here; Rooney spends 4p. on "CIA..and the 1966 coup," mounts a perfectly persuasive set of facts involving dates and contacts and money and promotions that yes, the coup was a CIA coup like so many dozens of other coups, but he backs away from attribution, I guess it's ok to nail the yanks but not to leave your initials
