Viking, New York. 1993, 304p., later printing, dj. The original version of the novel, on two gay Englishmen in the 1930s, one of whom joins the fight against Franco. The novel was suppressed under threat of a lawsuit by Stephen Spender, who claimed that Leavitt plagarized from his autobiography; the author removed and changed certain passages, the reissued the novel.
