Woods, Katharine Pearson

A web of gold

Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., New York. 1890, 307. [iv]p., original decorated cloth a bit shelf worn, minor edge wear, front panel a bit soiled on the lower edge, first edition. Woods was a member of the Knights of Labor. *Wright III 6090 "Set in an arcadian mill village, Hillhope, the story weaves romance and politics into a characteristic late nineteenth-century fantasy. The two protagonists are Victory Maurice, a foreign-born idealist and member of a secret anarchist society, and Agatha Godfrey, the winsome, pious daughter of the paternalist millowner.... The plot is one of espionage, the capitalist hoping to profit, the anarchist aiming to incite a revolution. In the end Maurice's love for Agatha and her strength of character and Christian faith lead to the alternative vision: socialism." *Buhle 117.
