Appleton & Co., New York. 1871, 234p. + [vi] ads; folded tables (which are unmolested), preface, inked initials on pastedown, mild foxing to publisher's ads at rear, green pebbled cloth boards with spine titling gilt and blind-stamped device front cover. Quite edgeworn with fraying at corner-tips and some tearing at top and tail; gilt is dim and barely legible, casing is very rubbed with pebbling bump-tops speckled white. An else sound copy free of any textual markings. Spencer actually predated Darwin in writing on evolution and coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" This is the first publication of his works in the US other than a few pamphlets
