Lowndes, William Thomas; Henry G. Bohn

The Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature, Containing an Account of Rare, Curious, and Useful books, Published in or Relating to Great Britain and Ireland, from the Invention of Printing; with Bibliographical and Critical Notices, Collations of the Rarer Articles and the Prices at Which They Have Been Sold in the Present Century. New Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged. Vols I - II [eleven volumes, complete set]

George Bell and Sons [titlepage] / Henry G. Bohn [cover slug], London. dated variously 1860-1880, Respectively from v.I: iv, 268; xii, to 576; iv, to 850; [i], to 1155; viii, to 1427; iv, to 1756; iv, to 2068; iv, to 2400; iv, to 2746; iv, 3027; iv, [1; Instructions to Binder], 336p., complete set in 7.5x5 inch printed cloth boards. Set is uniformly worn and appears to have been read through; a bit of old document tape secures a two-inch tear in leaf 583/4 in v.II; we see a pencilled checkmark in v.IX; cloth is a grimy orange with edgewear and small areas of fray; spine panels are faded and soiled to a uniform grey; many hinges are weak (but all are holding); each volume has publisher's ads in front and back both; and volume eleven, the Appendix, is provided with alternate title pages in the back. None of the parts appears to be first issue, and some of the presswork looks worn. One anomalous flaw: many of the volume numbers that are printed externally are printed incorrectly! (IX for X, and so forth), and were corrected clumsily by hand, in ink, a long time ago. Go figure; a good set, confirmed complete. Henry Bohn's running prefatory "Notices" to each and every volume make it abundantly clear that the set is indeed complete, this status confirmed by the Instructions to Binder. These prefaces generally are serial lamentings over the unforseen work Bohn devolved upon himself in undertaking the completion of Lowndes' manuscripts and overall plan, and the augmentation of the Lowndes deficiencies (Bohn adds considerable materials by Defoe, for instance). Publishers Bohn and Bell enjoy virtually the same London address, which may account for the confused presswork, including noncorrespondant dating, cover dates hovering around the 1860s, title pages 1870s to 1880
