Parton, James

Life of Andrew Jackson. In Three Volumes. Vol. I. Vol.II. Vol.III. [set]

Mason Brothers, New York. 1861, xxx, 636, x, 672, x, 734p., four frontis portraits (v.II has two), hardbound set in 8x5 inch diced cloth boards with similarly-designed spine titling and rulings, cloth color mis-matched (two in tan, one in dark green). A fairly sound set with the following flaws and virtues: first volume is markedly edgeworn, a quarter-inch of the top rim is lacking, bottom rim lacks an eighth-inch, card shows at corner-tips with some bumping, small insect losses along the upper joint. The hinges however are near-fine as are the endsheets (pace ownership legends) and the strong square textblock. Steel-engraved frontis is tissue-guarded and very good. Second volume (the one in green cloth) is sound and attractive, and may have benefitted from touch-up watercolor to the extremities; both portraits (one a silhouette) are foxed as it the separating tissue-guard; ownership signatures occupy the first blank (endsheets apparently too dark to write upon); find a mild marginal stain to terminal twenty or so leaves. Third volume: edgeworn with a frayed top rim, badly cracked front hinge (cords exposed, and are holding), textblock faintly flaccid, frontis is very good. All in all, a good set.
