The Newgate Calendar Improved; Being Interesting Memoirs of Notorious Characters Who Have Been Convicted of Offences Against the Laws of England, During the Seventeenth Century; and Continued to the Present Time, Chronologically Arranged. Comprising Traitors, Murderers, Incendiaries, Ravishers, Pirates, Mutineers, Coiners, Highwaymen, Footpads, Housebreaksrs, Rioters, Extortioners, Sharpers, Forgers, Pickpockets, Fraudulent Bankrupts, Money Droppers, Impostors, And Rogues of Every Description. And Containing A number of interesting Cases never before published [&c &c] With Last Exclamation of Sufferers [&c &c; 6 vols, complete set]

Printed for Thomas Kelly, London. [1836, x, 556, iv [index], 8 [publisher's menu]; 610, iv, 8; 498, iii, 8; 516, ii, 8; 615 [incl. index], i ["Arrangements of the Plates" for first five vols], 8; i ["List of Engraving in the Sixth Volume"], 668, 8, 8 [a doubled menu]. Six matched-set casebindings in original dark brown cloth boards spine-titled gilt and impressed with figured panels. All boards appear salvageable though one is detached, all spine panels losses with large defects and transverse rips. Textblocks are untrimmed and margins fragile, toned and liable to chip. Many plates are loose as are the frontis and title page of v.I, which are also chipped along foredge; the plate-count per instructions to binder are 39 + 10, or 49; we have found all but one: v.II p.370, "Murder Committed by Eugene Aram" is lacking, probably owing to binder's omission as there is no sign of excision; two plates in v.VI are foxed and edgeworn; the 48 are generally very good and correctly placed. Two volumes (IV and VI) were subjected to inept repairs which left each of them mildly "tite-back"). As is; restorable, and readable as is. Our dating is based on the title page of volume V (no others in our set are dated) and the matched production characteristics and condition throughout all six volumes. FYI, the plate-blocks are clean and clear and struck on slightly heavier paperstock; some are remarkably interesting, such as the startlingly gory frontis to v.II; in v.III the government torture of a Trinidadian woman; the v.V portraits of Richard Tidd and of William Davidson, the latter an Englishman of African descent) and some insipid.
