Chatterbox. 1897 [5 chromolithographed plates]

Estes & Lauriat, Boston. 1897, 412p., profuse b&w wood-engraved plates, ads; clothbacked boards with pastedown illustration. A virtually unrestoreable exemplar; terrifically worn casing is detached from its terrifically shaken textblock; many loose leaves, much edgewear; the cuts tend to be sound but some are not, less often because of wear than from amateur attempts to colorize. On the other hand, the five chromos are on sturdy stock and while edgeworn, wear does not affect graphics; white borders however are grubby. The lithographs are well-printed with multiple onlaid colors. Subjects portrayed are male and female children: "Helping Grandpa" (girl-child in winter gathering wood). "A Mischief Maker" (boy teasing dog with bellows). Two of the plates, "Dry-land Sailors" and "Jolly Little Sailors," would please Henry Tuke fans, especially the second. Fifth plate shows a pre-teen girl and her dog at a windy seaside. As is and with all faults.
