Statement of Southern Tenant Farmers' Union. March 2, 1939. Federal aid to education

STFU, n.p.. 1939, 4p., 8.5x14 inch mimeographed sheets stapled together at upper left corner, very good. Transcript of a statement apparently delivered before a federal agency. "The need for extending aid to increase the educational facilities and opportunities is more apparent in the south than in any other section of the country... The children of sharecroppers and tenant farmers, Negro and white alike, have been deprived of opportunities to secure an education for generations... While I am not ready to blame all of the ills of the South on the neglect of its children's education, this has been one of the largest factors in maintaining a system of farm tenancy that grew out of human slavery." Describes the greater dilapidation of Black schools than white schools.
