Abell, Mrs.; late Miss Elizabeth Balcombe

Recollections of the Emperor Napoleon, During the First Three Years of His Captivity on the Island of St. Helena: Including the Time of His Residence at Her Father's House, "The Briars"

John Murray, London. 1844, xii, 251p. + 16 [publisher's ads], engraved plates [defective], and tipped-in directions for placing the plates. Hardbound in shaky shape: dark green 8x5 inch boards decorated in blind and gilt, cloth and edges are very darkened, possibly smoke damage (but no corresponding indications within), front hinge is secured with a length of old mildewed masking tape, which also holds the tissue-guard of the long-gone frontispiece. Front free endsheet and blank[s] are absent, rear hinge has its endsheets but is at risk. Five of six called-for plates are present and in good shape, and an engraved titlepage accompanies the printed titlepage. Text appears complete, has a little foxing and dust. Reading copy.
