[Dransfield, W.]

A Guide to the Choice of Books; or, A Selection of More than Six Hundred Volumes; comprising some of the best and most recent publications in divinity, history, poetry, biography, travels, voyages, and literature in general; with copious and interesting notices from the various reviews, pointing out the character of each work, and recommending it to the attention of the reader.

Simpkin and Marshall, London. 1833, xi, 302p., publisher's ad leaf, hardbound item in 7x4.2 inch grey papered boards. Poor copy missing upper cover, lower nearly detached, spine label is handwritten in old sepia nib, textblock badly cracked and held only by one cord; first blank and titlepage are detached together; expect edgewear, dog-earing and foxing to preliminaries; text is entire: a reading copy. Compiler Dransfield (name from OCLC, also found on ad leaf) has a predilection for divinity, many of the "choice books" are that, many others, on divers subjects, are written by reverends. Typical entry: "-----Letters to the Young. 1 vol. 12mo. 6s.", followed immediately by a half-page recommendation from 'British Magazine'." Some entries have three, four, and more excerpts, from different periodicals, mostly unstinting praise, none critical in the modern sense.
