[Johnson, Samuel]

The Idler. In Two Volumes.

Printed for Peter Wilson, Dublin. 1762, 304p., the two volumes in one (break is at 158/9), first issue of the Irish edition. Full binding, 6.5x4 inch full polished calf with raised bands, black leather spine-label gilt-lettered and -rolled, printer's devices between each essay and a large head-piece at p.159. As is: very edgeworn, front cover is detached (salvageable, rough bookplate removal); rear cover is split along joint and may be held by a "repair" that leaves spine panel tight-back to textblock. Rear pastedown bears some pencilling about longitude and latitude. First blank (or ffep?) has a child's pencil-drawn ship, the next leaf is a blank with foxing and offset color, title page has old sepia ownership legends competing across top margin and some dirty smudging. Advertisement leaf also smudged. Both leaves of Table [of Contents] are torn an inch into foredge. Intermittent foxing and staining thereafter. The terminal free endsheet is accompanied by another blank. A reading copy amenable to restoration, even allowing the scuffing of the eccentric spine label.
