Ralph, Julian, editor; with contributions from A. Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, et alia

War's Brighter Side; The Story of "The Friend" Newspaper Edited by the Correspondents with Lord Roberts's forces, March-April, 1900. With fifteen illustrations

D. Appleton and Company, New York. 1901, xvii, 471p., illustrated with b&w plates reproduced on inserted coated paperstock, first American edition in 7.5x5 inch decorated cloth boards (portraits and facsimile autographs). A cracked front hinge has been inexpertly glued shut in such a way as to (unnecessarily) fasten the top rim to the textblock; the remaining length of spine panel is free. Find a small inoffensive bookplate on pastedown, else without ownership or other markings, mild dust-soil to casing, a sound clean reading copy. Doyle's contributions seem to be largely medical; Kipling's social; and the peculiar title is not ironic.
