Casa de la Cultur Ecuatoriana, Quito. 1948, 220p., text in Spanish, personal inscription in Spanish signed by the author and dated in the year of publication and with the author's address on the half-title; preceding page (with series list of titles) is detached but present, text-block very toned and fragile, otherwise good first edition in original cream wraps illustrated with woodcut vignette of axeman and tree in green ink, titles in brick red ink. Series: Biblioteca de Relatistas Ecuatorianos #VI. A novel on the exploitation of the indigenous Ecuadorian peoples by white Ecuadorians. The author and novel are often compared to John Steinbeck and his "Grapes of Wrath" Replacing the plight of the European and American worker with the plight of the indigenous population the novel is also considered a major proletarian novel. Fragments of the book appeared in English in Russia before the first English translation appeared in 1962
