Nasby, Petroleum V., text, Thomas Nast, illustrator.

"Swingin Round the Circkle." His Ideas of Men, Politics, and Things, as set forth in his letters to the public press, during the year 1866. Illustrated by Thomas Nast.

Lee and Shepard, Boston. 1867, 299p., numerous fullpage wood-engraved plates, hardbound first edition in 8x5 inch maroon cloth boards titled gilt with border rulings in blind. Ex library with severe defacements, cover is scuffed and frayed with worm-holes in the cover joint. Textblock is relatively sound, crimps and foxing are mild, plates undamaged, a reading copy with the cachet that the institutional library was Disney's: "Library of the Walt Disney Studio" is plentifully stamped over prelims and endpapers with occasional impressions within (no impingement on illustrations). The card in the pocket shows two unfamous borrowers. Text is quite racist; Nasby (aka David Ross Locke) undertakes to bind up the nation's post-Civil War-wounds (wounds to whites) by belittling several other ethnicities.
