Moses, John and Paul Selby

The White City. The Historical, Biographical and Philanthropical Record of Illinois, to which is added a sketch of the District of Columbia, the presidents of the United States, and Illinois at the World's Columbian exposition. Classified and Illustrated.

Chicago World Book Company, Chicago. 1893, xix, unpaginated material, map with spot color, 170, 132, 166p., a massive hardbound tome and one of the world's ugliest books (start your collection with this one). B&w illustrations are scattered throughout, the last ninety pages consist entirely in views of Expo grounds. Historical parts remind us that life in ILL was not all beer and skittles, with extraordinarily nasty encounters of Native American and Euro Implant. 10.5x7 inch brown cloth boards titled and decorated in blind and bronze, the cover decoration still decipherable, spine turned nearly blank. Hinges are cracked, the rear one rather badly, textblock has sunken in the casing and heel is frayed, paperstock is toned and the entire block mildly waved; a better than reading copy, not by much.
