Clarke, James Freeman

Memorial and Biographical Sketches.

Houghton, Osgood and Company, Boston. 1878, 434p., hardbound first edition bevelled boards, dark blue cloth gilt. A very sound copy as regards hinging and textblock, while the extremities show a little card and crimping, and find two small rough gouges to back cover; some foxing within, two old ownership autographs, and a tiny round pressure-mark that affects a corner of the last twenty leaves. About twenty biographical chapters: on abolitionists Charles Sumner, Samuel Joseph May and Theodore Parker; Junius Brutus Booth in his animal-rights persona; the medical feminist Susan Dimock; and several European literary luminaries.
