Ranch [text by Rebecca Solnit]

Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe NM. 1993, Unpaginated marginless b&w gravure plates with Solnit's brief concluding text printed white on black; hardbound in openweave black cloth boards titled in blind. The headbands are blue, we don't know what happened. Dust jacket bears some wiggle-y pressure marks, find a tiny remainder mark near bottom headband, otherwise the item is fine. A photographic impression and record of a little-known aspect of coastal California, and as Solnit says, "the cruel paradise of the rural world" where "the missions' booming cattle business had been expanded by secular ranchers. It was here that the saddles, chaps, spurs and lariats of cowboys came into being..The captured natives and their devout enslavers became the first vaqueros..and only this strange Californian beginning has been ignored in the otherwise celebrated history of the cowboy." "This first edition of RANCH is limited to 3,000 casebound copies. Printing is sheet-fed gravure on uncoated paperstock. The printing and binding are by Nissha Printing Company, Kyoto, Japan" (colophon text abridged) --nice job.
