[Van Evrie, John H]

Subgenation: the theory of the normal relation of the races. An answer to "Miscegenation."

Van Evrie, Horton & Co., New York. 1866, 72p, 5x7.5 inches, wraps, hand-sewn binding, second edition, cover nearly separated but present. Author of this treatise on black inferiority remained anonymous until after the Civil War as he feared being prosecuted for treason. Not a bad assumption - he called Lincoln's executive order freeing slaves in the rebellious states the "Miscegenation Proclamation." His main argument was that there is not one human race but six, with the white race as the most superior. The pamphlet to which this piece responds, "Miscegenation," advocated the elimination of racial barriers by intermarriage.
