[Democratic Party], [Maryland]. [1876], 2.5x6.5 tan card with black print and image of hand wielding a hammer on one side, very good condition. Card with Democratic Party national and Maryland state candidates during the pivotal 1876 election which ended in a decision that went to Congress. Tilden was governor of NY and a pro-reform (anti-Tammany Hall) Democrat who also opposed Northern interference in the South during Reconstruction. His opponent, Rutherford B. Hayes, won the election but with the proviso that he would remove federal troups from the South, ending Reconstruction. Arm-and-hammer symbol is mainly connected with labor in this period; Democrats claimed to represent labor and workers.
