Young, Governor C. C.

Reprieves, Commutations and Pardons 1927-1928 Communicated to the Legislature, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution [&c &c] on January 9, 1929

California State Printing Office, Sacramento. 1929, 51p., staplebound paper wraps glued into utilitarian library-style hard covers (neatly), no external titling, no accession or de-accession marks anywhere; the original plain printed cover is somewhat soiled with dust, handling and tiny splash-stains, and sustained a vertical crease prior to insertion into boards, which are very good. A good copy, with some underlining. Governor Young's extensive remarks display knowledge of transcripts, reproduce his own and correspondents' letters on case backgrounds. Includes his pardon of Charlotte Anita Whitney for her Criminal Syndicalism Act violation, finding that introduction of evidence of IWW activities was incorrect since she belonged to the Communist Labor Party, along with evidence of her sound character etc. Find also his reasons for delaying on clemency for Tom Mooney (he never granted Mooney a pardon). The rest are mostly pardons for murder convictions and the like
