Luce, Henry R., chairman

Fortune Volume xxiii Number 6 June 1941

Time Incorporated, New York. 1941, Softcover item: 192p., the usual lavish color and b&w photogravure production; 13x10.5 inch wraps with cover illustration credit to Dmitri Kessel; rather edgeworn with rolled spine and vertical cover crease affecting several adjacent leaves. Good-only copy. Find a stunning Artyzbasheff double-spread in fiery color titled "Cosmos of the UCC," on the Union Carbide Company. Much of this issue is devoted to Union Carbide (the striking cover illustration for starters) which the lead article (first of a projected series) characterizes as "A $365 million mystery corporation winding deep in the subterranean foundations of industry." Also find planning for the US highway system ("a bigger peacetime program is being scheduled"), planning for censorship in the war to come, and articles by Edgar Snow (planning for engagement in Asia), Fletcher Pratt (Naval strategy), I.A. Richards (basic English, backed by Rockefeller money, to be the lingua franca in the future). Substantial story with color photography on nickel-mining in Cuba; jet aircraft production will require "nickel going into heat-resistant steel"
