Outlines the accomplishments, needs, and unfinished business of the department under Ewart Guinier, its first chair. Guinier, born of Jamaican parents, was admitted to Harvard in 1929 and "was barred from the dormitories, was denied financial aid because he had failed to send his picture with his application, and was spoken to inside and outside of class by only one person," according to his New York Times obit. His daughter is Lani Guinier. He served as chair until 1980.
