Charles Stokes in Africa foreword by H. B. Thomas

East African Publishing House, Nairobi. 1972, 211p., small period photo section on inserted coated stock, line map, first edition 7.2x4.8 inch photo-decorated cardstock wraps. Edges slightly toned, entirely clean and sound, a near-fine copy. Englishman Stokes entered East Africa as a missionary, was dismissed when, after wife died in childbirth, he remarried into African society. He then took up trading; and was popular with his empoloyees. Executed by the Belgians as his bearers traversed their territory, largely for marrying an African. English and Belgian politics taking a cooperative turn, the matter was buried. Historical studies no. 6.
