The Stratford Company, Boston. 1921, 124p., very good hardcover with gilt title on front board; gift inscription dated 1927 on front endpaper. Poetry collection, the title deriving from the African American poet's assertion that "The Negro has been driven under all the burdens of oppression...but he has always been saved by his philosophy of life... He has been made strong in tribulation. He has constrained oppression to gve him wings." Includes critiques of discriminatory systems such as Jim Crow, and one poem "To the Chinese," concludes "Faint not, O brothers, if the forward way / Must lie through fire and famine, death and blood, / There follow you the kindling sympathies / Of other trammeled millions, and some day / These shall pour forth in swarthy hordes and flood / Some worthy field, and be your staunch allies."
