Johnson, James Weldon, Bob Cole and Rosamond Johnson

Under the bamboo tree; a successful interpolation by Marie Cahill in Sally in Our Alley

Jos. W. Stern & Co., New York. 1902, 8p. sheet music, 11x14 inch decorated monochrome wraps; spinefold is split and mildly ragged; expect general crimping and edgewear. Contents are complete, but poor copy. Sample lyrics, most likely JWJ's: "Down in the jun-gles lived a maid / Of roy-al blood though dus-ky shade / A marked im-pres-sion once she made / upon a Zu-lu from Mat-ta-boo-loo". The Johnsons began to compose together after Rosamond graduated from the New England Conservatory in 1897, writing for Broadway musicals with Bob Cole by the turn of the century (a partial list of their songs appears on the front wrap). These compositions precede the publication of "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" by more than a decade
