Printed for J. Wright, London. 1800, ix, 229, erratum, 1p.[author's ad]; stipple-engraved portrait on title page. First edition 8.5x5.2 inch polished calf gilt with rolled panels and black leather spine label, marbled endsheets, inner dentelles. Casing very edgeworn, tail of spine lacking an inch-long chip, upper joint split (both hinges holding), very rubbed but re-caseable. Former owner circa 1860 has neatly penned annotations at pp.158-168 and 228-229. Faint institutional stamp top edge of textblock, old stamped numeral on dedication leaf. Amongst former ownerships find C.K. Ogden's fiche on front pastedown; per net information, Ogden, 1889-1957 was an "English psychologist who collaborated with I.A. Richards in designing Basic English," and they together authored The Meaning of Meaning (a pre-postmodern title if ever there was one).
