Gayarre, Charles

The School for Politics. A dramatic novel.

D. Appleton and Co., New York. 1854, 158p., first edition 7.5x5 inch cloth boards elaborately panelled in blind, cover title gilt; ex libris with old institutional bookplate on the pastedown, tiny round label on spine, a few numerals to titlepage. Edgeworn copy with splits developing in the joints, a better than reading copy. Scene is Louisiana governor's mansion in Baton Rouge, the gov a divided Faustian sort. There may be temperance content, as one villain (or Bad Influence personified) made his boodle in "grog." Author's exposition is more stage-play than novel.
