Say, Allen

The Inn-Keeper's Apprentice

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. 1994, 149p., clothbacked boards in glossy pictorial dust jacket, first printing of a re-issue (of the 1979 text with a short new forword by Say); a very good copy with a holograph cartoon drawn by Say on the half-title, a self-portrait signed and dated 1996. The Japanese American artist is also a writer, and here relates his apprenticeship at age 13 to "famous cartoonist Noro Shinpei." Living in Tokyo widens his eyes, there is an encounter with prostitutes and a transvestite and there is a murder. Author's name in his father's generation was "Seii"
