Wendell Malliet and Company, New York. 1942, 254p., first edition, very good condition in a shelf worn dj with minor chipping at the head of spine and minor darkening, abrasions & pencil doodle on the spine. The retired pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, succeeded by his son Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., wrote a novel about a rapscallion who becomes a minister adept at keenly ferreting out the corruptions and two-faced nature of religious leaders and their flock (Could this be a fictionalized memoir of the charismatic preacher?). Powell was an early leader of the NAACP and National Urban League, and he promoted the notion of an institutional church that offered social as well as spiritual services to the community
