Coastlines Spring, 1959, vol. 3, no. 4, whole number 12

California Quarterly, Inc., Hollywood. 1959, 48p., 6x9 inches, soiled, stained and worn poetry journal in stapled pictorial wraps. Coastlines was a left-leaning publication that lasted between 1955 and 1964, replacing The California Quarterly when it folded in the mid-1950s. It published many radical poets including John Beecher and Thomas McGrath, both of whom lost their teaching positions during HUAC hearings. It was the epicenter of the Los Angeles poetry movement which has long been overlooked due to the prominence of the Beats in NYC and San Francisco. This issue includes a fairly early Bukowski poem, "Dow Jones: Down." At this time he had come back from his ten year binge and had begun to write and publish. The following year would see the publication of his first book
